EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Christopher Hinton, a distinguished British diplomat, adorned with the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun, a prestigious decoration bestowed upon him by the Emperor of Japan in recognition of his exceptional contributions to Anglo-Japanese relations. The Order of the Rising Sun is one of the most prestigious orders of merit in Japan, established in 1875 by Emperor Meiji to recognize individuals who have rendered meritorious services to the state or contributed significantly to various fields. The photograph, taken in the late 1950s or early 1960s, shows Hinton wearing the Grand Cordon of the Order, which is the second highest class of the order. The decoration is symbolized by a crimson-lacquered medallion bearing a gold radiant sun with rays extending outwards, surrounded by a golden sunburst. The Order's insignia is attached to a sash, which is worn draped over the left shoulder and across the chest. Christopher Hinton served as the British Ambassador to Japan from 1957 to 1961. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in strengthening diplomatic ties between the two countries, particularly during a time of significant political and economic change in Japan. Hinton's efforts contributed to the establishment of a strong and enduring relationship between the UK and Japan, which continues to be an important bilateral partnership to this day. This photograph serves as a testament to Hinton's dedication and commitment to fostering diplomatic relations between Japan and the UK, and is a reminder of the significant role he played in shaping the course of Anglo-Japanese relations in the post-war era.
