EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic William Hedley engine, built in 1813, which is considered one of the first locomotives of practical every-day use in the emerging railway industry. Listed in RE Bleasdale's Locomotive Engines catalogue, entry 1259, this engine was long held at Crag Head in Newcastle and was photographed there in 1881. Since then, it has been removed and is now housed in the Museum in Edinburgh. The Hedley engine, designed by William Hedley and his brother John, was a significant milestone in the development of locomotives. Although not the first locomotive, it was one of the earliest to be built specifically for railway use and was characterized by its improved design and efficiency. The engine's boiler was placed behind the driving wheels, allowing for better weight distribution and greater power. This engine was taken for the Stephenson Centenary celebration, marking the anniversary of the birth of George Stephenson, a pioneer in the field of railway locomotives. The Hedley engine's influence on the railway industry was profound, paving the way for more advanced and efficient locomotives to come.
