EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the distinguished profile of Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron Houghton, an English man of letters and prominent figure in 19th-century literary and political circles. Taken in 1885, this cabinet card portrays Milnes in the prime of his later years, sitting comfortably in a high-backed chair, his gaze fixed introspectively on some distant thought. Born on January 12, 1809, in London, Milnes began his literary career as a poet and critic, publishing his first volume of poems at the age of 22. He went on to become a prolific writer, producing works on various subjects, including biography, history, and travel. Milnes was also a passionate advocate for the abolition of slavery and women's suffrage, and he used his influence to promote these causes. Milnes' political career was equally noteworthy. He served as a Member of Parliament from 1831 to 1835 and again from 1852 to 1857. In 1841, he was appointed as a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury, and in 1859, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Houghton of Houghton Hall in Norfolk. Despite his many accomplishments, Milnes remains best known for his close friendship with Lord Byron, whom he met in 1812 when Byron was just 18 years old. Milnes became Byron's confidant and biographer, and he played a crucial role in preserving Byron's literary legacy after his death in 1824. This photograph is a poignant reminder of Milnes' significant contributions to English literature and politics, and it invites us to reflect on the life and legacy of this remarkable man. With its rich historical significance and evocative portrait of a literary titan, this image is a must-have for any collection of 19th-century English history or literature.
