EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph illustration, titled "Helicoprion with Tooth Whorl and Xenacanthus," provides a glimpse into the prehistoric world of ancient marine life. The illustration, created by F. John in 1910 for the publication "Tiere der Urwelt" or "Animals of the Prehistoric World," published in Hamburg, Germany, showcases two extinct marine creatures: Helicoprion and Xenacanthus. Helicoprion, the larger of the two creatures, was a cartilaginous fish, meaning it had a skeleton made of cartilage instead of bone. It is easily identified by its distinctive tooth whorl, a circular arrangement of teeth that spiraled around its jaws. This tooth arrangement is believed to have functioned like a screw, allowing the Helicoprion to better grip and swallow its prey. The smaller creature in the illustration is Xenacanthus, another extinct cartilaginous fish. Xenacanthus is characterized by its elongated, eel-like body and large, wing-like pectoral fins. This fish was also equipped with sharp, triangular teeth, perfect for seizing and devouring its prey. Both Helicoprion and Xenacanthus lived during the Triassic period, which spanned from approximately 252 to 201 million years ago. This period marked the beginning of the age of the dinosaurs but also saw the existence of many other fascinating creatures, like these two prehistoric sharks. The intricate details and vibrant colors in this illustration offer a captivating window into the past, allowing us to appreciate the unique and diverse marine life that once inhabited our planet. This historical piece not only showcases the beauty and mystery of these ancient creatures but also serves as a reminder of the ever-changing world around us.
