EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolour painting, created by Sydney Parkinson during Captain James Cook's first voyage across the Pacific Ocean between 1768 and 1771, captures the beauty of two native flowering plants from New Zealand and Australia: Hebe parviflora and Veronica floribunda. Cook's expedition, aboard the HMS Endeavour, marked the beginning of European exploration and documentation of the natural wonders of the Pacific region. Hebe parviflora, also known as koromiko, is a small shrub native to New Zealand. The plant is a member of the Plantaginaceae family, order Lamiales, and class Magnoliophyta. It is an angiosperm, a type of flowering plant that produces seeds enclosed in an ovary. Hebe parviflora is an eudicot, a subgroup of angiosperms that have two seed leaves, and is part of the asterid clade. The plant is characterized by its small, bell-shaped, white or pink flowers, which bloom in clusters. Veronica floribunda, also known as the clustered speedwell, is a flowering plant native to Australia. It is a member of the Plantaginaceae family, order Lamiales, and class Magnoliophyta. Like Hebe parviflora, it is an angiosperm and an eudicot. The plant is characterized by its blue, purple, or white flowers, which grow in clusters. This exquisite watercolour painting by Sydney Parkinson provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Pacific region during the 18th century. Parkinson's meticulous attention to detail and accurate depiction of these plants demonstrate his skill as an illustrator and his importance as a record-keeper of the natural world during Cook's groundbreaking voyage.
