This striking photograph captures a moment in time during the naval career of Prince Edward, later King Edward VIII, and his father, King George V, in 1893. The image shows the young Prince of Wales, then Duke of Cornwall, proudly wearing his naval cadet uniform as he stands next to his father, King George V, who is dressed in his full regalia as the Monarch of the United Kingdom. The 5th and 8th Duke of Cornwall and Prince of Wales, Edward was a keen supporter of the Royal Navy and underwent training as a naval cadet at the age of 12, following in the footsteps of his father and his grandfather, Prince Albert Edward, who had also served in the navy. This shared interest in the navy was a significant bond between the father and son, and their shared love for the navy would continue to shape their lives and their relationship. At the time of this photograph, the future King George V was already a seasoned naval officer, having served in the Crimean War and rising to the rank of First Sea Lord in 1891.
