This portrait captures the intensity and focus of the young sportsman in the prime of his career. Archer's success in horse racing began in the 1860s and continued through the 1880s. He was a master of the track, with an uncanny ability to read horses and navigate the course with ease. His silks, adorned with the distinctive red and white stripes of his sponsor, were a familiar sight at races across the country.
