EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the renowned French writer and librettist, Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle, in his later years. Born in 1657, Fontenelle was a prolific figure in the literary and artistic circles of 18th century Europe. His works, which included essays, novels, and librettos for operas, were celebrated for their wit, elegance, and insight. In this portrait, Fontenelle is shown wearing a turban and a fur-lined collar, adding an air of mystery and intrigue to his already distinguished appearance. The turban, a fashionable accessory for intellectuals of the time, may have been a nod to Fontenelle's extensive knowledge of Eastern cultures, as he was an avid student of history and philosophy. Fontenelle's writing was deeply influenced by the Enlightenment, and he was a vocal advocate for reason and rationality. His most famous work, "Entretiens sur la pluralité des mondes" (Conversations on the Plurality of Worlds), explored the possibility of life on other planets and challenged the prevailing beliefs of the time. Despite his many accomplishments, Fontenelle remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He once said, "I have no other occupation than to read and write, and I find myself happy in it." Fontenelle passed away in 1757, leaving behind a rich literary legacy that continues to inspire and captivate readers to this day. This evocative portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a man who defied the conventions of his time and left an indelible mark on the history of French literature.
