EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Esaias Tegner (1782-1846), a Swedish churchman and poet whose works left an indelible mark on Swedish literature. Tegner's life spanned a period of great change in Swedish history, and his poetry reflected the cultural and political shifts of his time. Born in the small town of Västerås, Tegner was educated at Uppsala University, where he studied theology and literature. He was ordained as a priest in the Church of Sweden in 1808, and served in various parishes throughout Sweden. However, Tegner's true passion lay in poetry, and he began publishing his works in the early 1800s. Tegner's poetry was deeply influenced by the Romantic movement, which emphasized emotion, individuality, and the beauty of nature. His most famous work, "Fritiof's Saga," is an epic poem based on Swedish folklore and mythology. It tells the story of Fritiof, a legendary hero who defends his people against invading enemies. The poem was an instant success and helped to solidify Tegner's reputation as a national poet. Despite his literary success, Tegner's life was not without controversy. He was criticized by some for his liberal views on religion and his support of the Danish-Swedish War of 1813-1814. However, Tegner remained committed to his beliefs and continued to write and publish until his death in 1846. This portrait, taken in 1782, captures Tegner in the prime of his life. He is depicted wearing the robes of a priest, a nod to his religious background, but his intense gaze and expressive face suggest the passion and creativity that drove him to become one of Sweden's most beloved poets.
