EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts Eleonora Gonzaga, Duchess of Urbino, in a portrait painted by Titian in 1543. Born into the powerful and influential Gonzaga family of Mantua, Italy, Eleonora was married to Guidobaldo II Della Rovere, Duke of Urbino, at the age of 14. The portrait showcases the Duchess's refined elegance and sophistication, with her intricately embroidered gown adorned with marten fur and a golden chain girdle. The marten fur, a symbol of wealth and status, was a popular fashion trend among European nobility during the 16th century. The golden chain girdle, known as a cintura da ferro, was also a status symbol, indicating the wearer's marital status and social rank. The Duchess's regal bearing and piercing gaze convey her strength and intelligence, making this portrait a true masterpiece of the Renaissance period. The chromolithograph is taken from Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck's "Costumes, Artworks and Appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th Century," published in Frankfurt in 1889. This historical record offers a glimpse into the fashion and art of the past, providing valuable insights into the lives of noblewomen during the Renaissance era.
