EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Edward Thurlow, 1st Baron Thurlow (1731-1806), during his tenure as Lord Chancellor of Great Britain from 1766 to 1778. Thurlow's impressive legal career began in 1754 when he was called to the bar at the Inner Temple. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Solicitor General in 1761 and Attorney General in 1763. Thurlow's political acumen and legal expertise earned him the position of Lord Chancellor under King George III. During his time as Lord Chancellor, Thurlow presided over the infamous case of the "Scotch Mob" in 1774, where he upheld the conviction of a group of Scottish weavers who had rioted against English factory owners. Thurlow's decision was controversial and sparked widespread protests, but it demonstrated his commitment to maintaining law and order. Thurlow's tenure as Lord Chancellor also saw the passage of several important pieces of legislation, including the Murder Act of 1752 and the Marriage Act of 1753. Thurlow's legal reforms helped to modernize the English legal system and establish the foundations for the rule of law that would endure for centuries. Despite his many accomplishments, Thurlow's political career was not without controversy. He was impeached in 1784 on charges of corruption, but was acquitted. Thurlow retired from public life in 1786 and spent the remainder of his days in private life. This portrait, produced in 1780, captures Thurlow at the height of his power and influence. The artist, unknown, has expertly rendered Thurlow's stern expression and the rich textures of his robes, conveying the dignity and authority of the Lord Chancellor. The portrait is a testament to Thurlow's remarkable legal career and his enduring legacy in the history of English law.
