Dreyfus Stands Trial: A Pivotal Moment in French History This powerful image captures the intense moment during the re-trial of Captain Alfred Dreyfus in Rennes, France, in 1899. Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French Army, had been wrongfully convicted of treason in 1894, a case that came to be known as the Dreyfus Affair. The affair, marked by anti-Semitic sentiment and political maneuvering, became a major scandal and a turning point in modern French history. In this photograph, Dreyfus, dressed in a military uniform, stands defiantly before the court, delivering his defence.
