Dreyfus Stands Trial: A Pivotal Moment in French History This powerful image captures the intense moment during the re-trial of Captain Alfred Dreyfus in Rennes, France, in 1899. Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French Army, had been wrongfully convicted of treason in 1894, a case that came to be known as the Dreyfus Affair. The affair, marked by anti-Semitic sentiment and political maneuvering, became a major scandal and a turning point in modern French history. In this photograph, Dreyfus, dressed in a military uniform, stands defiantly before the court, delivering his defence. His expression is calm and determined, despite the overwhelming odds against him. The room is filled with a tense atmosphere, as the judges, prosecutors, and spectators look on intently. Despite a strong defence and new evidence that exonerated Dreyfus, he was once again found guilty and sentenced to prison. However, public opinion began to turn in his favor, and in 1899, President Loubet granted him a pardon.
