Destruction Squad, flying car in quarry
Destruction Squad, flying car in a quarry. Joe Weston Webb fitted out an old Ford Popular with wings and a tail plane, then persuaded a stunt driver to shoot it over a water-filled quarry in the hope of creating the worlds first flying family saloon. Not surprisingly the vehicle plunged down and disappeared beneath the surface. Fortunately the stunt driver, Dave Brookland, had been provided with a bottle of compressed air and a breathing mask. He was trapped underwater for more than half an hour before a team of divers on standby just in case were able to haul him from the mangled wreck and bring him, unharmed, to the surface. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this thrilling photograph from the 1970s, the Destruction Squad's flying car takes center stage, suspended in mid-air above a water-filled quarry. The vehicle, an old Ford Popular, had been transformed by the daring and innovative mind of Joe Weston Webb. Equipped with homemade wings and a tail plane, Webb's vision was to create the world's first flying family saloon. With a sense of adventure and a touch of recklessness, Webb enlisted the help of a skilled stunt driver, Dave Brookland, to test the limits of his creation. The scene unfolds as the flying car roars over the quarry, its wings catching the wind and lifting it off the ground. But the thrill of flight was short-lived. The vehicle, pushed to its limits, nosedived into the watery depths below. Trapped underwater, Brookland's fate hung in the balance. With quick thinking, he was provided with a bottle of compressed air and a breathing mask, allowing him to stay alive while he waited for help. The team of divers on standby, prepared for such an eventuality, were able to rescue him after more than half an hour, bringing him unharmed to the surface. This daring stunt, a testament to human ingenuity and the spirit of adventure, took place in the 1970s, an era of innovation and risk-taking. The photograph captures the essence of a bygone era, a time when the impossible seemed within reach and the thrill of the unknown was a driving force behind human progress.
