Cornet Thomas Boothby Parkyns

Cornet Thomas Boothby Parkyns, 15th (or the King?s) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons, 1780. Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left ?J Boultbee, Pinx 1780?, by John Boultbee (1753-1812), 1780. Parkyns served in the 15th Light Dragoons from 1776 to 1781. He wears the distinctive metal light dragoons headdress with the comb and Gorgon?s head, together with the battle honour, ?Emsdorf? (1760), particular to the 15th (see also ). The artists sister, Jane Boultbee, was his stepmother. Shortly after his marriage to the ?sole heir of Sir William James?, Parkyns became MP for Stockbridge, Hampshire, then for Leicester in 1790. That he ?married money? is also suggested by the fact that in March 1794 he rejoined the Army as a Lieutenant and, by November, had risen through the ranks to be Colonel of the Prince of Waless (Leicester) Fencible Infantry, a regiment raised for home defence. The following year he was created Baron Rancliffe of the Peerage of Ireland. Date: 1780

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil painting depicts Cornet Thomas Boothby Parkyns, a distinguished soldier who served in the 15th (or the King's) Regiment of Light Dragoons during the late 18th century. The portrait, painted by John Boultbee in 1780, captures Parkyns in his regimental uniform, complete with the distinctive metal light dragoon headdress adorned with a comb and the Gorgon's head, as well as the battle honor, 'Emsdorf' (1760). Parkyns joined the 15th Light Dragoons in 1776 and served until 1781. Following his military career, he entered politics and became the Member of Parliament (MP) for Stockbridge, Hampshire, in 1784, and later for Leicester in 1790. The circumstances of his marriage to the 'sole heir of Sir William James' suggest that he had considerable wealth, which may have contributed to his political success. In March 1794, Parkyns rejoined the army as a Lieutenant and rose through the ranks to become Colonel of the Prince of Wales's (Leicester) Fencible Infantry, a regiment raised for home defense. The following year, he was created Baron Rancliffe of the Peerage of Ireland. The painting is a testament to Parkyns' military and political achievements and is a fine example of the artistic talent of John Boultbee. Boultbee's sister, Jane Boultbee, was Parkyns' stepmother, adding an interesting personal connection to the work.
