EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the daring exploit of British midget submarine XE3 and her crew, Lieutenant Ian Fraser RNR and Leading Seaman James Magennis, as they carried out one of the most remarkable attacks during the Second World War. The image captures the intrepid spirit and unyielding determination of these brave men as they navigated the cramped and challenging conditions of the submarine to execute their mission. In July 1945, during the waning days of the war, the British Navy's XE3 midget submarine, with a length of just 27 feet, set out on a daring mission to sink the heavily fortified Japanese cruiser, Takao, in the Johore Strait, Singapore. The success of this mission would depend on the skill and courage of the two-man crew as they faced numerous difficulties, including navigating the narrow strait, evading Japanese patrols, and executing the attack under continuous enemy fire. Despite the challenges, Fraser and Magennis managed to penetrate the Japanese defenses and successfully sank the Takao with a well-placed torpedo. Their heroic actions earned them the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor, making this attack one of the most significant naval victories of the Second World War. This powerful photograph, taken by renowned war photographer G.H. Davis, offers a glimpse into the world of wartime naval warfare and the extraordinary bravery and determination of the men who served in the British Navy during this period.
