EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the British battle cruisers HMS Queen Mary and HMS Tiger at sea during the early years of the First World War. The image, dated between 1914 and 1916, shows the two powerful vessels cutting through the water with an air of determination and strength. The HMS Queen Mary, depicted on the left, was one of the nine battlecruisers built for the Royal Navy, and was named after Queen Mary, consort of King George V. With a top speed of 28 knots and an impressive armament of ten 13.5-inch guns, she was a formidable force in the North Sea. However, the HMS Queen Mary's story took a tragic turn during the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916. Despite her size and firepower, she was hit by several shells and eventually sank, taking over 1,200 lives with her. The loss was a significant blow to the British navy, and the ship's sinking remains a subject of debate among military historians. In contrast, the HMS Tiger, shown on the right, survived the First World War and went on to serve in the inter-war period. Commissioned in 1914, she was the last of the pre-dreadnought battlecruisers and was known for her distinctive funnel and aggressive design. The Tiger was decommissioned in 1931, marking the end of an era for these iconic warships. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the sailors who served aboard these vessels during the Great War.
