EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing photograph, dated 1877, captures the moment when English inventor Edward Purkis proudly stands next to his unusual creation, the Frost Ornithopter. The Frost Ornithopter was an early attempt at creating a flying machine that mimicked the flapping motion of birds' wings. Purkis, a self-taught engineer, was fascinated by the idea of human flight and spent years designing and building this bizarre contraption. The exterior view of the Frost Ornithopter reveals its peculiar design. The machine features two sets of wings, each with multiple jointed sections that were intended to mimic the natural motion of a bird's wings. The wings were powered by the inventor's own arms, which were connected to the wings via a series of rods and pulleys. The machine also had a seat for the pilot, as well as a pair of large wheels for takeoff and landing. Despite its strange appearance, the Frost Ornithopter was not without its merits. Purkis managed to achieve short, controlled flights using the machine, albeit with the assistance of a large crane or tall cliff to provide the initial lift. The photograph shows Purkis in a determined and proud pose, suggesting that he believed he was on the verge of achieving human flight. This fascinating snapshot from the past offers a glimpse into the early days of aviation history and the boundless curiosity and ingenuity of its pioneers. The Frost Ornithopter may not have led to the development of modern aircraft, but it remains an intriguing and interesting chapter in the history of human flight.
