This print from the Historic England Archive takes us back in time to the grandeur of the British Embassy in Berlin. Standing tall on Wilhelmstrasse, this magnificent building known as The Palais Strousberg was a true architectural gem designed by Augustus Orth and completed in 1867-8. In 1884, the British government recognized its splendor and purchased it to serve as their esteemed Embassy. This particular image captures the breathtaking staircase hall, frozen in time during 1939, just before the outbreak of World War II. The intricate details of this space are awe-inspiring - from the ornate banisters that wind gracefully upwards to the beautifully crafted ceiling adorned with delicate chandeliers. One can only imagine diplomats and dignitaries ascending these very steps while engaging in important discussions that shaped history.
