EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the bustling streets of Wolverhampton in the late 19th century. The image showcases the Stafford Street Windmill, a once majestic structure that now stands as a haunting reminder of its former glory. The windmill, located on Stafford Street, is captured from Beaumont Street, offering a unique perspective of its dilapidated state. Surrounding buildings also appear worn down, emphasizing the neglected atmosphere that permeates this urban landscape. Taken around 1880 by an unknown photographer, this photograph serves as a poignant testament to the passage of time and human impact on our surroundings. For many years, this iconic mill lay abandoned except for storage purposes. Tragically, it met its demise circa 1894 when sand quarrying undermined its foundations and caused it to collapse. Despite its derelict condition depicted here, one cannot help but be drawn to the windmill's architectural beauty and historical significance. It symbolizes an era long gone – when windmills dotted landscapes across England – evoking feelings of nostalgia and curiosity about what life was like during those times. Preserved within Historic England Archive's vast collection, this print allows us to appreciate both the craftsmanship behind such structures and their vulnerability to neglect over time. It reminds us of our responsibility to protect and cherish our heritage for future generations.
