Piling core surveying JLP01_08_061976

PATERNOSTER SQUARE, CITY OF LONDON. A team from Ground Engineering Ltd carrying out a site survey with a soft drilling rig during construction of the Paternoster development.
Work on the Paternoster development was carried out in a joint venture by John Laing Construction Limited, Trollope and Colls Limited, and George Wimpey and Company Limited. The scheme involved the redevelopment of a seven acre site on the north side of St Pauls Cathedral. The site had been almost entirely devastated during an incendiary raid in December 1940. The development consisted of a series of office blocks, a shopping precinct, an extensive piazza and a three-level car park. The Ground Engineering Ltd team shown in the photograph were from one of Laings subsidiary companies. The main services they provided were soil investigation, drilling and site dewatering

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the iconic Paternoster development in Paternoster Square, City of London. The image showcases a team from Ground Engineering Ltd diligently carrying out a site survey with a soft drilling rig. The Paternoster development was an ambitious joint venture undertaken by John Laing Construction Limited, Trollope and Colls Limited, and George Wimpey and Company Limited. This project aimed to revitalize the seven-acre site on the north side of St Paul's Cathedral that had been ravaged during an incendiary raid in December 1940. In this snapshot from the 1960s, we witness the dedicated Ground Engineering Ltd team working tirelessly to investigate soil conditions, drill necessary foundations, and manage site dewatering. Their expertise played a crucial role in ensuring the success of this redevelopment endeavor. The Paternoster development itself comprised several office blocks, a bustling shopping precinct, an expansive piazza area for public enjoyment, as well as a three-level car park to accommodate modern transportation needs. This photograph not only offers us insight into post-war regeneration efforts but also serves as a testament to human resilience and determination. It is through such collaborative projects that cities are reborn after times of devastation – breathing new life into urban landscapes while honoring their historical significance.
