Paternoster Square JLP01_08_060912a

PATERNOSTER SQUARE, CITY OF LONDON. A McKinney Foundations crane and pile driver at work during the construction of the Paternoster development, with St Pauls Cathedral in the background.
Work on the Paternoster development was carried out in a joint venture by John Laing Construction Limited, Trollope and Colls Limited, and George Wimpey and Company Limited. The scheme involved the redevelopment of a seven acre site on the north side of St Pauls Cathedral. The site had been almost entirely devastated during an incendiary raid in December 1940. The development consisted of a series of office blocks, a shopping precinct, an extensive piazza and a three-level car park

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling construction of Paternoster Square in the heart of London's City, with St Paul's Cathedral majestically standing tall in the background. The image showcases a McKinney Foundations crane and pile driver diligently at work during the redevelopment of this historic site. The Paternoster development was a joint venture between John Laing Construction Limited, Trollope and Colls Limited, and George Wimpey and Company Limited. This ambitious project aimed to revive a seven-acre area on the north side of St Paul's Cathedral that had been ravaged by an incendiary raid in December 1940. The scheme encompassed several office blocks, a vibrant shopping precinct, an expansive piazza, and even a three-level car park. It symbolized not only urban progress but also post-war regeneration as London rebuilt itself from its wartime scars. This photograph offers us a glimpse into the transformative power of architecture and construction in shaping our cities' landscapes. It serves as a testament to human resilience and determination to rebuild after devastation. Preserved by Historic England Archive, this image encapsulates both historical significance and architectural achievement. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, let it remind us of how far we have come while appreciating the beauty that arises from renewal.
