A Typical Crevasse on Level Surface. The Snow Bridge fell in just after the Bluff Depot Party had passed over it, c1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. The image shows the aftermath of an intense moment when the snow bridge collapsed just after the Bluff Depot Party had passed over it. This dangerous incident occurred during Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton's second expedition to the Antarctic from 1907 to 1909. Shackleton, along with three companions, achieved a remarkable feat during this expedition by reaching the Farthest South latitude at 88° S. Their record-breaking journey brought them within only 97 geographical miles of the South Pole, marking one of the greatest advancements in exploration history towards that elusive point. Aside from their incredible progress towards the pole, Shackleton and his team also conquered Mount Erebus, which is known as one of Antarctica's most active volcanoes.
