EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Pyotr Lavrovich Lavrov, a prominent Russian publisher, engrossed in preparing the influential journal Vpered (Forward) around 1873. Lavrov, also known as a philosopher and statesman, was an active member of the Narodniks movement that emerged in Russia's middle classes during the late 19th century. This socially conscious movement gained momentum after the emancipation of serfs in 1861. Lavrov's radical views led to his exile to the Urals in 1868; however, he managed to escape and sought refuge abroad in Paris and later Zurich. In 1872, he founded Vpered!, a socialist journal through which he analyzed Russian history and advocated for a socialist revolution that would involve rural masses. The photograph showcases Lavrov's distinguished appearance with his full beard symbolizing wisdom and rebellion against societal norms. His intense focus on printing reveals his dedication towards disseminating progressive ideas through literature. This monochrome portrait not only highlights Lavrov's significant contributions but also serves as a testament to the intellectual ferment present within Russia during this period. It is an invaluable piece from a private collection that offers us insight into one man's pursuit of social change amidst political turmoil.
