Mrs Taffys Elixir, 1873. Artist: Joseph Swain

Mrs Taffys Elixir, 1873. The Union representative in the centre is told that, had the workers had a vote, they would not have voted to strike. This cartoon relates to the strike action taken by 10, 000 ironmasters colliers in Glamorgan and Monmouthshire at the beginning of 1873. The knock-on effect was to put a further 60, 000 ironworkers, temporarily at least, out of work. Punch disapproved of the numerous strikes being taken by workers in various industries. The end of the previous year had seen bakers and carpenters withdrawing their labour, as well as the Metropolitan police and Londons gas-workers. From Punch, or the London Charivari, January 18, 1873

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Mrs Taffys Elixir, 1873" captures a significant moment in history. Created by artists Joseph Swain and John Tenniel, this satirical cartoon reflects the strike action taken by 10,000 ironmasters colliers in Glamorgan and Monmouthshire at the beginning of 1873. In the center of the image stands a Union representative who is informed that had the workers been given a vote, they would not have chosen to strike. This scene symbolizes Punch magazine's disapproval of the increasing number of strikes occurring across various industries during that time. The repercussions of this particular strike were far-reaching as it resulted in an additional 60,000 ironworkers temporarily losing their jobs. The impact on families and communities was immense. The artwork depicts people from all walks of life: women wearing aprons and shawls, men with tools like spades and pickaxes, children observing from afar. It portrays a snapshot of Welsh society during the 19th century when strikes were prevalent. Through its monochrome aesthetic and detailed engraving style, this heritage image partnership print offers viewers an insight into both social dynamics and political tensions within Wales at that time. It serves as a reminder of how labor disputes shaped history while highlighting gender roles within society. Overall, "Mrs Taffys Elixir" encapsulates an important chapter in industrial relations during the 19th century through its powerful visual storytelling.
