Mount Erebus Over a Water-Worn Iceberg, October 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Mount Erebus Over a Water-Worn Iceberg, October 1911, (1913). Weathered iceberg on Ross Island in the Ross Dependency, with the active volcano Mount Erebus in the background. Erebus is the second-highest volcano in Antarctica and the southernmost active volcano on Earth. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Mount Erebus Over a Water-Worn Iceberg, October 1911" captures the rugged beauty of Antarctica's Ross Island. Taken by renowned artist Herbert Ponting during the Terra Nova Expedition in 1911, it showcases a weathered iceberg standing majestically against the backdrop of Mount Erebus, an active volcano. The Terra Nova Expedition was led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott and aimed to conduct scientific research while also attempting to reach the South Pole. The team consisted of experts from various fields such as geology, zoology, meteorology, and photography. In this photograph, Ponting skillfully captures the contrast between the icy blue hues of the water-worn iceberg and the ominous presence of Mount Erebus in its smoky glory. The image serves as a testament to both nature's power and vulnerability in this remote region. Tragically, despite their valiant efforts, Scott and his team were beaten to their goal by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. Stranded due to blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey from reaching the South Pole in January 1912, Scott and his companions perished just miles away from safety. This poignant image is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I - a collection that immortalizes not only Scott's ambitious quest but also pays tribute to those who lost their lives pursuing scientific discovery amidst extreme conditions.
