H.M.S. "Miranda", and her Prizes, in Litscha Bay, Russian Lapland, 1854. Crimean War: Royal Navy ships bring home booty after destroying the town of Kola. View of the Miranda with two captured Russian schooners. Four luggers were set on fire as they were...unnavigable to England...The Bay is picturesque and snug, about thirty-five miles from the mouth of the river Kola...[After the attack] it was a tremendous scene of destruction; the buildings, stores, and monastery all in flames, and each bell, as their stupendous beams burnt through, fell to the bottom of the tower, tolling its last knell. There were seven bells. One of these has been brought home by the Miranda...The date on it is Anno 1656'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
H.M.S. Miranda and her Prizes in Litscha Bay, Russian Lapland, 1854" is an evocative and historically significant image capturing the aftermath of a naval victory during the Crimean War. The photograph, created by an unknown artist, depicts H.M.S. Miranda, a British screw sloop, anchored in the picturesque and snug Litscha Bay, approximately thirty-five miles from the mouth of the River Kola. The Miranda is proudly displaying her recent acquisitions - two captured Russian schooners - as smoke rises from the burning wreckage of the town of Kola in the background. The Crimean War, which lasted from 1853 to 1856, was a major European conflict between Russia and an alliance of Western European powers, including Britain. The attack on Kola was a significant victory for the Royal Navy, which aimed to disrupt Russian naval capabilities in the White Sea. The scene is one of dramatic destruction. Buildings, stores, and a monastery are engulfed in flames, with each bell tolling its last knell as their stupendous beams burned through. Seven bells were in the tower, one of which has been brought home by the Miranda. The date on it is Anno 1656. The image is a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of war and the acquisition of booty by the victorious British Navy. The Miranda and her prizes stand out against the backdrop of the rugged hills and hills, with the smoke from the burning town adding to the sense of drama and destruction. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the past, providing a visual record of a pivotal moment in naval history.
