EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enchanting Gatehouse of Kirkless Priory, captured around 1910 by the talented artist A. Wigglesworth. Nestled in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, this Grade I listed Jacobean hall holds a rich history dating back to the 16th century. The origins of Kirklees Priory can be traced even further, all the way back to the 12th century when it was constructed by Cistercian monks. However, what truly sets this location apart is its connection to one of England's most beloved legends - Robin Hood. According to folklore, Robin Hood found refuge within these very walls as he sought shelter from his pursuers led by the Sheriff of Nottingham. The priory's prioress was said to be his aunt and provided him with sanctuary during his daring escapades. As you gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece, you can't help but feel transported into another time and place. The stone facade exudes an air of antiquity while also embodying a sense of tranquility that only religious architecture can inspire. This photograph captures not just a physical structure but also encompasses elements of literature, mythology, and British heritage. Preserved within Bibbys Annual 1912 publication by J. Bibby & Sons in Liverpool, this image serves as a testament to both historical significance and artistic prowess. It allows us to appreciate the beauty and cultural importance held within Kirklees Hall and its surrounding landscape for generations past and present alike.
