French Infantry of the Line, 1854. Creator: Unknown

French Infantry of the Line, 1854. Soldiers in the French army during the Crimean War. Prince Menschikoff, in his apologetic description of the battle, ascribes his repulse to the fact that the Russian Commanders ware wounded; and that "the enemy's infantry occasioned great losses in horses, artillerymen, and infantry officers." A more just explanation would have been to confess that the wretched serfs, raised on black bread and quass, whom the Czar sends him, are unable to stand against English and French soldiers, even when the former number more than four to one of the latter'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the French Infantry of the Line during the Crimean War in 1854. The soldiers, dressed in their full uniform, are shown standing at attention with their bayonets fixed, exuding a sense of discipline and readiness. The image was published in the Illustrated London News, a renowned 19th century British newspaper, and was likely taken from a battlefield during the conflict. The Crimean War (1853-1856) was a major European conflict that pitted the Russian Empire against an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, the United Kingdom, and Sardinia. The French army, represented in this print, played a significant role in the war, particularly during the Battle of Inkerman in November 1854. The caption accompanying the print provides an insightful commentary on the battle, attributing the Russian defeat to the poor condition of their soldiers. The soldiers in this print, however, appear strong and determined, challenging the notion that the Russian army was made up of "wretched serfs" who were unable to stand against their British and French counterparts. The French soldiers in the print are dressed in their distinctive uniforms, which include kepis (caps), harem pants (trousers), and breeches. Their guns are at the ready, emphasizing their preparedness for battle. The print offers a fascinating glimpse into the military fashion of the time and the realities of 19th century warfare.
