EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Eleanor of Austria, Queen of France, in all her regal splendor. Captured in 1911 by The Connoisseur magazine, this portrait immortalizes a woman who held great power and influence during the 16th century. Eleanor's life was marked by significant marriages that shaped European history. Her first union with her uncle, King Manuel I of Portugal, ended tragically when he succumbed to the plague. Undeterred by loss, Eleanor then became engaged to King Francis I of France and their marriage on July 4th, 1530 solidified her position as Queen consort. In this photograph, Eleanor stands tall and elegant in a magnificent rose-colored gown adorned with fur trimmings. Her attire reflects both her royal status and fashionable taste for the era. The ermine cloak draped over one arm further emphasizes her authority as queen. The image captures not only Eleanor's physical beauty but also hints at the strength she possessed as a female monarch in a male-dominated world. Her piercing gaze exudes confidence and determination while simultaneously revealing traces of vulnerability. As we admire this remarkable portrait from Otto Limited's collection dating back to 1911, we are reminded of Eleanor's enduring legacy within the House of Habsburg and beyond. She remains an emblematic figure whose influence transcended borders and time itself.
