In this poignant photograph, taken in [Plymouth] on a sunny day in 1862, we witness a momentous occasion as the esteemed Earl of Mount Edgcumbe places the memorial stone for Devonport, Stonehouse, and Cornwall Hospital. Surrounded by dignitaries from various fields - including naval officers, military personnel, and local authorities - His Lordship is flanked by Mr. Alfred Norman, architect of the hospital.
As part of a grand ceremony with Masonic honors, The Earl receives the silver trowel from the Provincial Grand Officer before spreading cement on the lower stone. With great solemnity, he declares the upper stone laid in due form, marking a significant milestone for this esteemed institution.
