EDITORS COMMENTS
**A Timeless Tribute: The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe Places Memorial Stone** In this poignant photograph, taken in [Plymouth] on a sunny day in 1862, we witness a momentous occasion as the esteemed Earl of Mount Edgcumbe places the memorial stone for Devonport, Stonehouse, and Cornwall Hospital. Surrounded by dignitaries from various fields - including naval officers, military personnel, and local authorities - His Lordship is flanked by Mr. Alfred Norman, architect of the hospital. As part of a grand ceremony with Masonic honors, The Earl receives the silver trowel from the Provincial Grand Officer before spreading cement on the lower stone. With great solemnity, he declares the upper stone laid in due form, marking a significant milestone for this esteemed institution. The scene is filled with symbolism and tradition as corn, wine, oil, and salt are strewn about to consecrate the site. The ceremony concludes with rousing renditions of "Hallelujah Chorus" by the choir and "National Anthem", echoing through time as we gaze upon this historic moment captured so beautifully in black-and-white. **Credit:** Heritage Images
