The Christening in the Chapel, 1844. Creator: Unknown

The Christening in the Chapel, 1844. The ceremony of christening the infant daughter of the Marquis and Marchioness of Exeter...was performed by the Bishop of Peterborough...Her Majesty [Queen Victoria] attended at the ceremony, and occupied the seat in which it is stated Queen Elizabeth usually sat, when attending divine service at Burghley [House]. The infant was named after her Most Gracious Majesty. The Queen appeared to be very much interested in the ceremony. After it had concluded, her Majesty kissed the young godchild of her Royal Consort...When brought into the chapel the infant was fast asleep in its nurses arms. Immediately after the ceremony, Prince Albert presented to his little god-daughter a gorgeous gold cup, with the inscription: " To Lady Victoria Cecil, from her godfather Albert". The Christening in the Chapel, 1844 - A Royal Celebration of Faith and Family

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from 1844, we witness a momentous occasion - the christening ceremony of the infant daughter of the Marquis and Marchioness of Exeter. The ceremony took place in the grand chapel, with its exquisite architecture serving as a backdrop to this significant event. The Bishop of Peterborough presided over the baptism, while Her Majesty Queen Victoria graced the occasion with her presence. Seated in a spot traditionally reserved for Queen Elizabeth during divine services at Burghley House, Queen Victoria displayed great interest throughout the ceremony. As captured by George Davys' engraving for "Illustrated London News" we see Prince Albert tenderly kissing his young godchild after presenting her with an opulent gold cup bearing an inscription dedicated to Lady Victoria Cecil. This touching gesture exemplifies both familial love and royal duty. Notably, upon entering the chapel, little Lady Victoria was sound asleep in her nurse's arms – blissfully unaware of the historical significance surrounding her christening. This image serves as a timeless reminder that even amidst grand ceremonies and regal surroundings, life's simplest moments can be cherished. This photograph offers us a glimpse into British history – showcasing not only religious traditions but also highlighting connections between royalty and noble families. It stands as a testament to faith, family bonds, and enduring legacies that transcend time itself.
