EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in history - the Attack on the French invasion flotilla at Boulogne, France, in August 1801. The image depicts Admiral Lord Nelson leading a valiant British fleet against Napoleon's forces massing on the northern French coast. In an attempt to prevent Napoleon's planned invasion of England, Lord Nelson was entrusted with defending the English Channel. This particular attack on Boulogne proved unsuccessful, but it showcased the unwavering determination of the British navy during this tumultuous period. The print offers a glimpse into naval warfare during the French Revolutionary Wars, showcasing towering warships engaged in fierce battle amidst choppy waters. Soldiers can be seen bravely fighting aboard these vessels as they clash with their French counterparts. The signing of the Treaty of Amiens later that year brought temporary relief from invasion threats, marking a significant turning point in European history. This historical document serves as a reminder of both Britain's resilience and France's ambition during this era. Preserved through time and skillfully engraved by A Challamel for La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecle, Volume IV (1882-1884), this monochrome masterpiece transports us back to one of history's most intense moments - where nations clashed upon vast seas for supremacy and survival.
