Admiral Horatio Nelson was a British naval commander who is remembered for his many victories against the French and Spanish during the Napoleonic Wars. He was born in Norfolk, England in 1758 and joined the Royal Navy at age 12. Throughout his career, he gained fame for his tactical brilliance and leadership skills, which enabled him to win several major battles including Trafalgar in 1805. His death at Trafalgar cemented his legacy as one of Britain's greatest naval heroes. Nelson rose through the ranks quickly due to his skill and bravery, eventually becoming a Vice Admiral in 1797. He was known for taking risks that paid off; he famously used a daring strategy to defeat Napoleon's navy at Aboukir Bay in 1798. This victory earned him national acclaim and made him an icon of British patriotism. In 1801 he led another successful campaign against Denmark before being appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet two years later. In October 1805 Nelson faced off against Napoleon's combined French and Spanish fleets at Trafalgar near Cadiz, Spain; despite being outnumbered two-to-one he managed to secure a decisive victory that changed the course of European history by ending Napoleon's plans for invasion of Britain. Unfortunately Nelson himself died during this battle after being shot by a sniper on board one of enemy ships.
