Lord Astor leading in Rhodes Scholar (b/w photo)

8671546 Lord Astor leading in Rhodes Scholar (b/w photo) by English Photographer, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Lord Astor leading in Rhodes Scholar. Lord Astor, winner of 12 races with 10 horses in 1935, has won every classic race except the Derby. He has won the Oaks on five occasions - Sunny Jane (1917), Pogrom (1922), Saucy Sue (1925), Short Story (1926) and Pennycomequick (1929). Rhodes Scholar, with R Dick up, won the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown and proved itself to be the leading colt of 1936. The hard ground which prevented Rhodes Scholar from being properly trained probably cost Lord Astor the Derby of 1936. Lord Astor is the husband of Lady Astor, MP for Plymouth. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the legendary Lord Astor leading in Rhodes Scholar, showcasing his prowess as a prominent figure in the world of horse racing. Known for his remarkable achievements on the racetrack, Lord Astor was a force to be reckoned with, winning an impressive 12 races with 10 horses in 1935 alone. Despite his numerous victories, including five Oaks titles with horses like Sunny Jane and Pennycomequick, Lord Astor had yet to secure a Derby win. The photo also highlights Rhodes Scholar's triumph at the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown, solidifying its status as the top colt of 1936. However, fate seemed to have other plans for Lord Astor and Rhodes Scholar as they faced challenges due to unfavorable training conditions that ultimately cost them victory at the Derby of 1936. Nevertheless, their legacy lives on through this striking image captured by an English photographer in the early 20th century. Lord Astor's influence extended beyond the racetrack as he was also known for being married to Lady Astor, who served as MP for Plymouth.
