EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Pit, Backworth" showcases the remarkable work of an unknown English School artist from the 19th century. Measuring 43x54 cm, this oil on canvas masterpiece is housed in the prestigious Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. The painting transports us to a pit at Backworth, near Shiremoor in North Tyneside. Opening its doors in 1818, this particular pit was the first of eight pits at Backworth. In the heart of the image lies the prominent winding gear used to transport miners and extract coal from beneath the earth's surface. Adjacent to it stands a towering engine house with its chimney billowing smoke into the sky. Intriguingly, we observe coal wagons being hauled by a rope using a stationary engine system that was employed between 1823 and 1867. This unique method adds depth and historical significance to this picturesque scene. Believed to have been commissioned for a stable keeper at the colliery, this artwork beautifully captures both industry and nature intertwined. The presence of spades, labourers, pulleys, workers, horses, and coal mining equipment further emphasizes their tireless efforts within this Victorian-era colliery. Through meticulous brushstrokes and attention to detail, the anonymous artist has masterfully depicted an important chapter in England's industrial history—a testament to human resilience amidst challenging working conditions.
