EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph taken at the London Zoo in April 1925, we are transported back in time to witness a heartwarming moment between a young collared tamandua and its keeper. The image beautifully captures the incredible dexterity of these fascinating creatures as the tamandua clings onto its keeper's fingers with its prehensile tail, reaching out to hold onto the keeper's arm. The historical significance of this photo is evident, showcasing a special bond formed between human and animal nearly a century ago. The full-length shot allows us to appreciate the unique physical features of both the tamandua and its keeper. With their semi-arboreal nature, it comes as no surprise that these mammals possess such an impressive ability to grasp objects using their long tails. This particular species, known as southern tamanduas or collared tamanduas (Tamandua tetradactyla), belong to the anteater family Myrmecophagidae. As we observe this intimate interaction within their enclosure at London Zoo, we can't help but marvel at nature's wonders. Thanks to Bridgeman Images' preservation efforts, we have access to this remarkable piece of history captured by Frederick William Bond (1887-1942). This photograph serves as a reminder of our shared connection with animals and how zoological institutions like London Zoo play an important role in fostering understanding and appreciation for wildlife.
