MAN464429 Empire Marketing (colour lithograph) by Williams, Hugh (fl.1920s); Manchester Art Gallery, UK; (add.info.: commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Dobson, Molle Ltd for HMSO;
Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Empire Marketing" by Hugh Williams takes us back to the 1920s, a time when the British Empire was at its peak. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Dobson, Molle Ltd for HMSO, this colour lithograph was created with the intention of promoting sales of goods produced within the empire. Housed in Manchester Art Gallery's remarkable collection of artist-designed posters, this piece is part of a series commissioned between 1926 and 1933. The Empire Marketing Board aimed to instill an empire-conscious consumer mindset among Britons, encouraging them to support products from Great Britain as well as its Dominions and Colonies. With over 200 acquired posters from that era, Manchester Art Gallery offers a glimpse into the people, places, and products that defined the vast British Empire. However, viewing these images through a contemporary lens can be thought-provoking. Some posters may convey uncomfortable beliefs or raise difficult questions about the legacies left behind by colonialism. KLEIN IMAGING has skillfully captured this particular artwork in their print reproduction. As we admire this vibrant lithograph today, it serves not only as a testament to historical marketing strategies but also invites reflection on our present understanding of imperialism's impact on society.
