EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a section of the Paris right bank city wall, which was constructed between 1190 and 1209 on the orders of Philippe II Auguste. The late 18th-century artwork, created by an anonymous French artist, beautifully captures the historical significance of this fortification. Intriguingly, this particular section of the city wall later became part of the Dominican Convent (Couvent des Jacobins) in the 17th century. Founded in 1611 and suppressed in 1790, it served as a place of spiritual contemplation within these ancient walls. Adjacent to it stands the Parloir aux Bourgeois (Town Hall), which played a crucial role as one of Paris' early administrative centers before being incorporated into the convent. Sadly, time took its toll on this magnificent structure, leading to its demolition in 1816. However, through this exquisite painting preserved at Musee de la Ville de Paris, Musee Carnavalet in France's capital city itself, we can still marvel at its grandeur. The image transports us back to medieval times when Philippe II Auguste reigned as King of France from 1180 to 1223. It serves as a testament to his vision for fortifying and protecting his beloved city. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from Bridgeman Images' collection on Fine Art Finder, we are reminded not only of Paris' rich history but also how art has the power to immortalize moments that
