by Degas, Edgar (1834-1917); 42.50x50.00 (framed) 27.00x34.00 (unframed) cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: The upper left corner of this painting bears a dedication by Degas " to his dear friends." The double portrait depicts Paul Lafond (left). future curator of the art museum at Pau, in southwestern France, and Alphonse Cherfils (right), an art collector and defender of the Impressionists. Through the influence of these friends, Degass works were selected for the annual exhibitions of the Societedes Amis des Arts (Society of Friends of the Arts), and his painting, A Cotton Office (1873), was the first by the artist to be purchased by a museum. Since the painting held by the two men is probably by Degas, this intimate image commemorates both personal and business relationships.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back in time to witness a significant moment between two influential figures in the art world. Paul Lafond and Alphonse Cherfils stand before a painting, engrossed in their examination. The oil on wood panel artwork is believed to be by none other than the renowned artist Edgar Degas himself. The dedication found on the upper left corner of the painting reveals that it was gifted by Degas to his dear friends - Lafond and Cherfils. This double portrait serves as both a personal memento and a testament to their professional relationship. Lafond, who would later become the curator of an art museum in Pau, France, played an instrumental role in promoting Degas' works. Through his influence, Degas' paintings were selected for prestigious exhibitions organized by the Société des Amis des Arts (Society of Friends of the Arts). Additionally, thanks to Cherfils' support as an art collector and defender of Impressionism, one of Degas' pieces - "A Cotton Office" from 1873 - became the first artwork by the artist ever purchased by a museum. This intimate image captured within these frames not only commemorates cherished friendships but also highlights how personal connections can shape artistic careers. As we gaze upon this timeless photograph print from Fine Art Finder, we are reminded of both the power and beauty that lies within human relationships within creative spheres.
