EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Temple Bar in all its historical grandeur. Taken around 1878 by Alfred and John Bool, this image showcases the magnificent architecture of this c17th baroque gateway designed by Christopher Wren. Originally built between 1669-72, Temple Bar marked the boundary of the City of London on the road to Westminster. The photograph is part of a series of 120 images published between 1875-87 by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London. This society aimed to document buildings in danger of demolition, preserving their memory for future generations. The restoration efforts depicted here are a testament to their dedication. Temple Bar was removed from its original location in 1880 and reinstated at the entrance to Paternoster Square in 2004 after being relocated to Theobalds Park, Hertfordshire. Its neoclassical archway with volutes and segmental pediment stands as a symbol of Victorian architectural excellence. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported back to a time when ceremony and celebration filled these streets. It serves as a reminder that even amidst progress and change, it is essential to preserve our heritage for generations yet unborn. Bridgeman Images has beautifully captured this moment from history through mzphoto's lens. This print allows us to appreciate not only the artistry behind Temple Bar but also its significance as an enduring piece of English history.
