Burton, Commercial Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire. The Burton store on the corner of Commercial Road and Meadow Street, seen from the south before construction of the Cascades Shopping Centre.
Meadow Street was redeveloped as part of the Cascades Shopping Centre, probably in the late 1980s. The Burton store at 159-161 Commercial Road remained, although many of the windows on the Meadow Street facade were blocked up

Winter - a Greek or Roman woman warms her hands by a fire

Winter by Henry Ryland - a Greek or Roman woman warms her hands by a fire set in an ornamental metal basin. Although he did paint in oils, Ryland specialised in highly finished watercolour paintings containing images of young women in classical draperies on marble terraces. Subjects of this type were popularized by Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Albert Moore and J. W. Godward. Date: 1905
