EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print, titled "Louis D'or" and created in 1705, offers a captivating glimpse into the life of Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King. The etching portrays the monarch seated at a table, seemingly asleep or engrossed in reading a letter. Resting on his left elbow, he exudes an air of tranquility and regal poise. The intricate details within the artwork transport us to another era. On the table lie two money bags and loose coins alongside a letter addressed to "Mon Cousin. . recompense de ure service". A majestic eagle supports the tabletop, symbolizing power and strength. Louis XIV's coat is adorned with fleurs-de-lis patterns, reflecting his royal status. A robe featuring similar motifs lies opposite him on the table. Through the window behind him unfolds a picturesque view of Emser Bad, adding depth to this historic scene. Hanging on one wall is an intriguing picture depicting tents and a battle scene titled "Louis Dort" cleverly playing with words that reference both gold (d'or) and sleep (dort). Below this enchanting image are four lines of verse: "Amice Ad Quid Venisti" which translates to "Friend, Whereto Art Thou Come?". This biblical reference from Matthew 26:50 invites contemplation about loyalty and purpose. With its rich historical context and traditional illustrative technique, this antique etching evokes nostalgia for bygone eras. It serves as a reminder of our cultural heritage while showcasing Louis XIV's grandeur through artistry that has stood the test of time.
