Herpes simplex virus, TEM
Herpes simplex virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a herpes simplex virus. The virus has an icosahedral capsid (protein coat, yellow/light green, centre left) surrounding a core of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) genetic material. The membrane envelope surrounds the capsid and is usually continuous with it, but it has broken away here, giving the virus a "fried-egg" appearance. Herpes simplex is one of the most common viral pathogens in humans. It causes inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes, characterized by fluid-filled blisters. Magnification unknown.
