The Wright brothers, US aviation pioneers

The Wright Brothers, Orville (1871-1948), left, and Wilbur (1867-1912), right, American aviation pioneers. The brothers were interested in flight and were inspired by the German glider, Otto Lilienthal. They began their own experiments, using basic wind tunnels to study aerofoil shapes and designed wing warping as a means of control, emulating the way birds control their flight. They even designed and built their own light-weight engine. On 17 December 1903 at 10.23am, their powered aircraft, the Wright Flyer, made its first flight with Orville at the controls. The era of aviation was born

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the legendary Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, who revolutionized aviation in the early 20th century. As American aviation pioneers, their unwavering passion for flight led them to embark on a remarkable journey that would forever change the course of history. Inspired by German glider Otto Lilienthal, these visionary brothers embarked on their own experiments. Using basic wind tunnels to study aerofoil shapes and emulating birds' flight control techniques through wing warping, they pushed the boundaries of human ingenuity. Not content with just mastering flight dynamics, Orville and Wilbur went even further by designing and constructing their very own lightweight engine. Their relentless pursuit paid off on that momentous day - December 17th, 1903 at precisely 10:23 am. It was then that their powered aircraft aptly named the Wright Flyer took its inaugural flight with Orville skillfully maneuvering it into the skies. With this groundbreaking achievement, an era of aviation was born. The photograph captures these two extraordinary men side by side; united in purpose and determination as they paved the way for future aviators to soar beyond imagination. In this monochrome image rich with historical significance, we witness not only inventors but also pilots filled with boundless courage and ambition. These Caucasian brothers stand as an emblematic duo whose indomitable spirit propelled humanity's conquest of the skies.
