Photo Mug : Wahn (Hummling), Germany
Home Decor From Mary Evans Picture Library
Wahn (Hummling), Germany
Schiessplatz Wahn (Hummling), Germany. The site of the artillery range of the Krupp weapon manufacturing company. The settlement was totally abandoned (and razed to the ground) when the Artillery range was expanded in 1941, during the Second World War. The gentleman in the lower image looks extremely like Kaiser Wilhelm II and probably is! Date: circa 1910

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the quaint charm of Wahn, a small settlement in Germany that once stood in stark contrast to the industrial might of the nearby Schiessplatz Wahn (Hummling) artillery range. Established by the Krupp weapon manufacturing company, the range expanded dramatically in 1910, leading to the total abandonment and eventual razing of the community. The image presents a scene of bygone days, with a bustling train station at the center, surrounded by modest buildings and a horse-drawn carriage. The gentleman in the lower left corner, with his distinctive mustache and military attire, bears an uncanny resemblance to Kaiser Wilhelm II, adding an intriguing layer to the historical narrative. The peaceful serenity of the scene is a stark contrast to the impending changes that were about to engulf the area. As the Krupp company continued to expand its operations, the need for more space and resources led to the displacement of the residents of Wahn. The once-thriving community was erased from the map, leaving behind only the echoes of its past. Today, Schiessplatz Wahn (Hummling) stands as a testament to the inexorable march of progress and the human capacity for innovation, while also serving as a poignant reminder of the lives and stories that were lost in the process. This photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era, inviting us to reflect on the complex interplay of history, progress, and human experience.
