EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the Sons of Eleanor Gwyn: Charles Beauclerk, the first Duke of St Albans (1670-1726), and his younger brother James Beauclerk (1671-1679). The brothers were the illegitimate sons of the famous English actress and royal favorite, Nell Gwyn, and King Charles II. The image captures the likenesses and the elegant attire of the two brothers, who were both prominent figures in their own right. Charles Beauclerk, the elder son, inherited his mother's charisma and wit, and rose to become a successful military commander and a powerful political figure. He was created a Duke in 1718, and served as Lord Chamberlain and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. His younger brother, James, tragically died at a young age, leaving no issue. The print offers a glimpse into the lives of the Sons of Eleanor Gwyn, who, despite their unconventional origins, made significant contributions to English history. The image also serves as a reminder of the complex relationships and intrigues that defined the court of King Charles II and the Restoration era. The print, created in the early 18th century, showcases the artistic skill of the period, with the brothers depicted against a richly decorated background and dressed in fashionable attire of the time. The print is a valuable historical record and a testament to the enduring legacy of the Sons of Eleanor Gwyn.
