EDITORS COMMENTS
This tinted image depicts the R34 airship, one of the most iconic and pioneering aircraft of its time, gracefully soaring through the sky. The R34 was a British rigid airship, designed and built by the Royal Naval Airship Factory at Cardington, Bedfordshire, between 1911 and 1913. It was the world's first successful larger-than-airship to make a return transatlantic crossing, achieving this remarkable feat in 1919. The R34 was 482 feet long and had a maximum speed of 16 miles per hour. It was powered by two 12-cylinder Rolls-Royce Eagle engines, which provided a total power output of 200 horsepower. The airship's hull was made of duralumin, a lightweight metal alloy, and its envelope was covered in a fabric coated with dope and dusted with calcium carbonate to make it waterproof. This photograph captures the R34 in its prime, with its distinctive shape and elegant curves accentuated by the soft tint. The image also provides a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to an era of innovation and exploration, when the skies were still a frontier waiting to be conquered. The R34's historic transatlantic voyage marked the beginning of a new era in air travel and paved the way for the development of larger and more advanced airships. This tinted image serves as a reminder of the ingenuity and determination of the pioneers of aviation, who pushed the boundaries of what was possible and opened up new horizons for humanity.
