EDITORS COMMENTS
Alcock and Brown's Historic Vickers Vimy Flight: The First Transatlantic Aircraft Crossing This photograph captures the moment of triumph as Alcock and Brown, the intrepid aviators, stand before their historic Vickers Vimy aircraft, moments after making aviation history. The image, taken in 1919, depicts John Alcock (left) and Arthur Brown (right) in front of their modified Vickers Vimy biplane, which they had successfully flown across the Atlantic Ocean from Newfoundland, Canada to Ireland, marking the first transatlantic flight in history. The Vickers Vimy, a two-engine biplane, was a military transport aircraft that had been modified for the daring transatlantic attempt. The aircraft, registered as G-EADZ, was outfitted with additional fuel tanks, a larger wingspan, and a streamlined fuselage to increase its range and endurance. The flight, which took place on June 14 and 15, 1919, lasted for 16 hours and 28 minutes, covering a distance of approximately 1,890 miles. The successful completion of this groundbreaking flight not only demonstrated the potential of air travel as a viable means of transportation but also captured the world's imagination, inspiring a new era of aviation exploration and innovation. This iconic image of Alcock and Brown with their Vickers Vimy serves as a testament to their courage, determination, and the limitless possibilities of human ingenuity.
